Why The Brazilian Keratin Treatment Is Taking Flack

By Tammie Caldwell

In this day and age people spend a lot of money and time on their appearance. Hair, especially, receives particular attention. A person with well styled hair is a person that goes to some lengths to make sure that there appearances are favourable. It is interesting to note that so many people with straight hair pay money to curl it whilst people with wavy hair spend a fortune to have it straightened. Perhaps that is why the Brazilian keratin treatment has become so popular.

Over the ages, hair styles have changed. One thing remained constant, however. People want to be fashionable. Hair and hair styles have always been part of the fashion of the day. And yes, to this very day people are willing to spend money on sporting the latest style. Getting your hair strait may cost a lot, but it is worth it if it will render a person fashionable.

The protein that covers the hair and that protects it against damage is called keratin. It is this substance that proponents of hair straighteners use to promise their clients silky soft, beautiful straight hair. They say that their treatments not only straighten the hair but also feed it and render it more healthy than it was before. And, of course, many women believe this and flock to the salons.

People and salons that offer this treatment to their clients maintain that it is not only safe but that it is beneficial. From the testimony of many people one thing is certain, however. It does work. This treatment does straighten hair. Does it harm the hair. Nobody will say. People will, it seems, do almost anything to gain their beauty goals. And perhaps this is good enough for most people.

Of course there are critics. They say that this treatment is dangerous. They say that this treatment results in broken ends, brittle hair and under nourished hair. There are even those that alledge that the treatment causes cancer. Critics also warn that treatments do not last. They have to be repeated every few weeks and that the negative effects will compound. In fact, OSHA have issued a warning about this product.

It is interesting to note that OSHA has issued a warning about this kind of hair treatment. They found that the treatment not only damages the hair permanently, but that once treated it stopped the hair growing back naturally. They furthermore think that the treatment may have other long term health indications such as rashes, skin cancer and even permanent hair loss.

Despite the many criticisms against this method of hair straightening people continue to flock to salons to look the way they want to. Numerous web sites attest to the effectiveness of this treatment. Perhaps the jury is still out. But one thing is certain. As long as people want to look beautiful they will embrace treatments that give them what they want.

One thing remains certain. Women will always want their hair to be the way fashion dictates. They will straighten it or wave it, depending in the moods of the current fashion. And it is not only women that adhere to the dictates of fashion. Increasingly, men are also prone to fashion prescriptions. And of course there is nothing wrong with that.
